OUR SERVICES

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENTS (ESIAs)

We specialise in conducting Full Environmental and Social Impact Assessments in various industry sectors covering mining, agriculture, housing development, forestry, energy, waste management, manufacturing, processing and transport. We have the experience and expertise to advise clients about their legal obligations in terms of national, municipal by-laws and international standards. We are able to liaise, on their behalf, with all government departments in the environmental field.

We have many years of experience in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment and have established an experienced and expert group of specialist to assist with EIA projects. Specialists in the fields of botany, biodiversity, faunal studies, fresh water studies, heritage experts, visual impact, socio-economic, soil surveys and more, are at hand. Over the last couple of years, the EIA team has completed more than 15 major environmental assessments, environmental monitoring and facilitation projects, mostly in Harare and Manicaland provinces.

SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT & QUALITY AUDITS

Environmental auditing is recognized as a vital step in the management of environmental, health, safety and quality issues. ELWAS’s team of qualified, experienced environmental auditors can undertake a range of audits. Our audit reports offer more than a simple compliance statement by providing risk assessments, corrective actions, and pragmatic and best practice recommendations to assist in managing environmental issues.

We undertake the following types of audits:

- Compliance audits including environmental and safety audits;

- Management audits and

- Functional audits such as for water, energy and waste.

CLEANER PRODUCTION & GHG EMISSIONS

A cleaner production assessment identifies opportunities for increasing efficiency in the use of raw materials such as energy, water, chemical and materials to reduce waste and pollution that increase business productivity and efficiency. We prefer a pragmatic approach involving development of an on-site cleaner production team that includes site personnel to assist our consultants provide a meaningful assessment.

The assessment identifies process inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement. Taken further, feasibility studies can be undertaken on specific opportunities to enable potential financial and environmental savings to be realised.

Greenhouse gas assessments are now a standard requirement for many development applications. Our GHG assessments follow the accepted GHG standards and protocols and base calculations for GHG emissions on the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and the National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA) Factors. Direct and indirect GHG emissions are estimated in tonnes of CO2-e per annum. Options to reduce sources of greenhouse gas emissions are also provided.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS MANAGEMENT

Our experienced consultants can provide expert advice on the manufacture, handling, storage and transport of hazardous chemical substances and undertake studies required for compliance or to evaluate risk. Our capabilities in this area include:

Hazardous area zoning;

- Auditing for compliance with zoning requirements;

- Design of engineering solutions to satisfy hazardous area zoning requirements;

- Emergency Response Plans and staff training;

- Fire safety studies;

- Preliminary hazard analysis;

- Hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies; and

- Assessment of major hazard facilities.

CONTAMINATION & REMEDIATION STUDIES

We have extensive experience in undertaking assessments to determine the extent and nature of existing site contamination including remediation actions.

Our methods involve site confirm the nature and extent of contaminants that exist at the site.

ELWAS use a best practice approach to soil sampling a potentially contaminated site that has a greater accuracy than conventional methods for identifying hotspots.

GIS SERVICES

We provide the full range of GIS services to satisfy all information needs for Spatial Planning and Management. Our services include the following:

- Land surveying and mapping

- Spatial Analysis & Modelling

- Map Production

- GIS Consultation

OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE

Dust: Our occupational hygiene experience extends over 10 years. We measure a variety of dust fractions from a variety of dust sources. Predominant amongst these is respirable dust (PM5) and inhalable dust (PM10). We maintain a large number of personal sampling pumps, real-time dust monitors, Dust traks and other air quality devices. Our services in occupational dust measurement include:

- Personal and static pump sampling;

- Sampling and assessment of a range of substances including, respirable dust, inhalable dust, respirable quartz, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and stannic chloride;

- Design of solutions to contaminant exposure; and

- Recommendations of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Noise: Our highly skilled noise consultants provide expertise for noise problems for instance from industrial and commercial noise emissions, residential road traffic intrusion, internal noise quality, noise complaints and noise in the workplace. We provide solutions to noise problems by specifying and designing appropriate mitigation measures.

Key areas we can assist in are noise impact assessments, noise monitoring and compliance, and occupational noise assessments. We use state of the art noise sound level meters for conducting our site investigations.

Light: Good lighting is important in ensuring that employees work comfortably and efficiently. We are experienced in carrying out light assessments as well in working environments. We advise industries on optimum light requirements for different work spaces and how to achieve them.

AIR QUALITY SURVEYS

We assist industries, regulatory authorities and the wider community by investigating and measuring air quality issues and offering pragmatic and cost-effective solutions.

This includes measuring emissions and air quality in accordance with national and international standards, modelling air dispersion and air pollution impacts, developing management programmes and controls, and interpreting the regulations concerning air matters.

Our expertise includes contour mapping of gaseous emissions, air dispersion and pollution levels that delivers a diagrammatic representation of predicted pollution levels from the source.

We also arrange and interpret results of emissions testing from boilers, generators, incinerators, vehicles and other process related emissions from industry.

We undertake site investigation works to determine sources of emissions in workplaces and health sensitive areas such as office buildings and public places using our extensive expertise in chemicals and material properties, research, analytical methods, and systematic problem solving.

We use a Flue Gas Analyser acquired from e-instruments which we calibrate on timely intervals.
